What began as a single location in Carlsbad, California, more than 25 years ago is now the largest network of business communications and postal service centers in the world, with over 5,900 The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc.® locations worldwide.
In 1980, the first Mail Boxes Etc. center opened. The concept was simple: Provide small businesses and individuals with a better, more convenient way to meet their basic business needs. Consumers responded positively to our concept and franchising opened up the opportunity for thousands of entrepreneurs and families.
Since that time, the number of small businesses and consumers around the world demanding quality services and time-saving convenience has grown. As our customers demanded more, we adapted our operations and services to meet their needs: Most of our centers offer extended operating hours and expanded account services for businesses of all sizes.
In 2001, Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. was acquired by UPS®, the world’s leading express carrier and largest package delivery service. UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories. In 2003, the two companies introduced The UPS Store opportunity to the United States franchise network and nearly 90% of the Mail Boxes Etc. locations re-branded on April 7th. In 2004, UPS generated revenues of $36.6 billion and delivered more than 3.6 billion packages and documents worldwide. In October 2005, The UPS Store brand was introduced in Canada where 95% of the network re-branded. Outside of North America, nearly 1,000 stores operate under the Mail Boxes Etc. brand.
